10U Slow Pitch wins C.I.T. Tournament

4 win Sunday captures Crafton-Ingram-Thornburg championship

Congratulations to the 10U Slow Pitch tournament team for winning the C.I.T. tournament.  This team went 7-1, only giving up 14 runs over 8 games.  After losing to a very good West Jefferson team on Saturday the girls came back on Sunday ready to battle.  With great pitching and a tremendous defensive performance they went on to beat Cranberry, Penn Township, and West Jefferson twice to win the crown.  We are very proud of these little CHAMPIONS.  The C.I.T. tournament is fast-becoming the biggest and most competitive slow pitch tournament in Southwestern PA.

Come from behind win sparks run to championship

The North Hills 8U all star team won the McCandless tournament in dramatic fashion vs. Hampton Township. With the scored tied 6-6 in the bottom of the sixth; Haley Behr singled home Bethany Tonarelli with the championship run. Tonarelli led off the sixth with a single and advanced to second on Emily Reiner’s single before Behr’s heroics.

North Hills pulled off an amazing comeback. The girls were down by three runs with two outs and no one on base before they erupted for 5 runs and advanced to the playoff round. Then, the girls used stifling defense and timely hitting in beating #1 seed Ingomar 10-3 and #2 seed Hampton for the championship. North Hills’ defense gave up only 10 runs over the final 16 innings of the tournament.

The North Hills tournament team would like to thank the parents, grandparents, family and other North Hills’ tournament players and coaches for their outstanding and very vocal support.

Softball Programs

North Hills Athletic Association (NHAA) offers softball for girls ranging in age from five to eighteen years.  Our softball program has grown substantially over the past five years; in 2001 we had just over a hundred registered players.  By 2008, we will have over two hundred players registered to participate.

Girls who are five and six years old may register for our girls' softball program in the Slow Pitch Instructional Division or our Beginners League (T-ball) which is offered for both boys and girls.

For girls who are seven and eight years old, softball is offered through our Slow Pitch Instructional Division.  Nine to eighteen year old girls may register for slow pitch or fast pitch softball.  For softball, the division your daughter should register for is determined by her age as of January 1.   This age group determination is different than boy’s baseball, including Beginners League, which has an April 30th/May 1st cut-off for determining age groups.

Beginners League (T-Ball) - Girls & Boys Ages 5, 6
Beginners League starts in mid April and runs 10 weeks—4 Weeks of practice and 6 weeks of games. Games are played at Ross Elementary Field, Sangree Field and Rosecliff Field #1, which is the smaller of the 2 fields. Games last 2 innings with every player batting in each inning. Coaches pitch a restricted injury factor ball; a tee is provided if a player has trouble with a pitched ball. By mid-season most players can hit the pitched balls. No scores are kept, as this league teaches the enjoyment of team play.

Instructional Slow Pitch Softball - Girls Ages 5, 6, 7 & 8
Instructional slow pitch softball begins in April and runs until the end of June. Most games are scheduled at Rosecliff Field #1 and some games are scheduled at Oesterle Field. This is the first age group for girls softball. The fundamentals of the game are taught as well as team play and sportsmanship. Coaches pitch to the girls at this age. This is a fun time as well as a learning experience.

10U Slow Pitch Softball - Girls Ages 9 & 10
The 10 & under slow pitch league begins in April and runs until the end of June. All home games are played at Rosecliff
Park. All teams make the playoffs and all games have umpires. This age group has the players pitch to the batters and the pace of play becomes more upbeat. It is at this age that most players show more interest for the game as their skills begin to develop even further. At this age level parents should spend as much time as possible with the players. Development is quick and great strides can be made with practice. The season ends with all teams competing in the playoffs.

10U Fast Pitch Softball - Girls Ages 9 & 10
The season begins in April and ends in early July with the playoffs. All games have umpires and the strict pitching rules are followed. The level of play becomes more advanced and the players are very competitive.  All home games are played at Rosecliff Park. This age group is the first age for fast pitch. Players should be encouraged to practice their skills at this age because often they become discouraged when learning fast pitch.

12U Slow Pitch Softball - Girls Ages 11 & 12
The 12 & under slow pitch league begins in April and runs until the end of June.  All home games are played at Johnanna Field.   All teams make the playoffs and all games have umpires.   At the conclusion of this league, many girls will move on to fast pitch and are pleasantly surprised that they can play fast pitch without much adjustment. We encourage all girls to give fast pitch a try.

12U Fast Pitch - Girls Ages 11 & 12
The season begins in April and ends with the playoffs in early July. This age group begins to show signs of great development by the end of their second year (age 12).  All home games are played at Johnanna Field. The players have a sense of what the game is about and how it should be played. Off season clinics are strongly recommended before the next season. These clinics are offered by N.H.A.A. as well as other organizations and will greatly aid a players advancement.

15U Fast Pitch - Girls Ages 13, 14 & 15
The season begins in May and ends in late July.  These girls are very serious about softball and the level of play reflects their intensity. Many of these players play softball for school teams which is why the season begins later.

18U Fast Pitch (Ages 16-18) Girls
This level of play is very fast and players are very focused!  Players who continue to play at this age are dedicated softball players who are serious about the game. The games are high spirited and very delightful to watch. Playing at this level requires years of practice dedication. These young ladies are a joy to watch. We applaud their years of dedication!
